If you get a chance to get out and about around Lisbon, here are a couple of tips to help you on your way.

Lisboa Card

A great pass which gets you free or discounted entry into lots of attractions, as well as free public transport around town.

The Card only costs 11.25 euros for 24 hours, 18.50 euros for 48 hours and 23.50 euros for 72 hours.

Buy it at Turismo, Palácio Foz, Praça dos Restauradores (351 21 346 6307); Lisboa Welcome Center, Rua do Arsenal 15 (351 21 031 2800); and some museums

Internet Access

If you require internet access, the best places, and cheapest are the National telecom company Portugal Telecom (PT) public spaces. They have lots of computers, complete with outgoing email and print facilities. They are situated at the following locations;

One is at its Forum Picoas headquarters, another on Rossio square (Praça Dom Pedro V), and the other in the Colombo shopping centre.

PT: shop C.512, Centro Colombo (351 21 716 8408), 10am-midnight daily, metro Campo Militar. Shop C.05, Centro Comercial Picoas Plaza, Rua Viriato (251 21 316 0257), 8am-10pm daily, metro Picoas. Praça D. Pedro IV, 68, 8am-11pm daily, metro Rossio.

And finally to ensure that no-one goes thirsty, a few words you may need, not in order of importance!

Wine = Vinho
Beer = Cerveja
Water = Água
Juice = Sumo
Coffee = Café

1 = um          6 = seis
2 = dois        7 = sete
3 = três         8 = oito
4 = quarto     9 = nove
5 = cinco      10 = dez

TECHNOLOGY

How much do we need?

How imageflow has improved our workflow

One of the questions for discussion at this years conference is how much technology is needed by your clients.

The reason to introduce any new technology into your organisation is to improve your procedures and the service you provide.

Not all technology is useful to all picture libraries. Do not be drawn into using technology, which will not improve your workflow, just because it is offered by your competitors.

Before receiving an investment proposal from Opus, the team will enter into an in-depth investigation of your organisation and its particular needs. The solution that we offer is configured according to your individual requirements.

Imageflow is dramatically changing our workflow at Peter Arnold, Inc.

Our scans of archived images are processed effortlessly in its image transfer, making high-res delivery files, previews and thumbnails quickly.

So quickly that we often use this process for sending custom
on-demand scans to clients shortly after their request.

I can be searching scanned images while I talk with a client on the phone, making a selection and telling them what we have, adding a new scan, then creating a lightbox delivered shortly after the conversation.

The settings for each image size are fully customizable, and the size sent to the client easily adjustable. We can also apply individual rights control, should that be necessary.

Imageflow simplifies both analog and digital archiving. It can read data from the IPTC header into the image record letting photographers contribute directly to our workflow.

Their data entry ensures caption accuracy saving work for us. And Imageflow's analog cataloging lets us enter records for similars together.

To further simplify cataloging they developed a handy templating system.

Stored information, including caption, keyword, photographer etc. can be retrieved and applied to a new record. Now there's no need to archive similar images together.

Progressive templating also lets us build upon previous templates to develop increasingly detailed and accurate keywording.

For example, keywords for a giraffe at a watering hole are applied to a retrieved template for keywords common to all giraffes, which has been made from one for all African mammals, built from the basic mammal’s template.

Comprehensive keywording has never been easy. Imageflow makes it as consistent, reliable, and painless as possible.

IMAGE QUALITY

KEYWORDS – DON’T LOCK IMAGES AWAY

CATALOGUING THE KEY TO IMAGE SALES IS EASY ACCESSABILITY

Maintaining the quality of your images is vital to the client perception of your resource.

Whilst this was once the domain of your photographers and picture editors, the burden is now also shared with your technical staff as increasing numbers of images are scanned, manipulated and stored.

As the debate into the best ways to maintain the quality of your digital files we have created our software to support a variety of file formats and in addition allow the user to specify the sizes at which the images are saved to create the four stored images.

Learn more at the CEPIC seminar on Quality in Digital Files at the Auditorium of the Teatro da Trindade, Largo da Trindade, Saturday 31 May, 10.00 to 12.30

Whether you are an internal picture researcher fulfilling a request for a client, or a client searching for images on the internet, your search results will only be as good as the keywords will allow.

Such is the importance of the keyword, CEPIC are devoting a seminar to the subject at this years congress.  Attic Room of the Teatro da Trindade, Largo da Trindade, Saturday 31 May, from 14.30 to 16.00.

The right Image Management Solution should be your greatest cataloguing asset. It should increase the consistency and accuracy of the image information and have a comprehensive search engine to assimilate the data efficiently.

An effective system will not only assist the user to enter images more quickly by reducing the repetitive aspects of the process.

At Opus we have over the years discussed many times with our clients the best ways to ensure that the right keywords are applied to each image.

To this end we have built into our software comprehensive cataloguing structures, which we believe lead the user through this vital area without encumbering them with needless restrictions.

Within the image cataloguing system the user is able to set-up several tiers of image information which can be used to find images in addition to keywords.

On the first level is the CATEGORY which provides a broad heading.

The next level is the SUBJECT which creates the sub-divisions of the Category. The Subject has four levels within it, which allow the user to created unlimited subdivisions of the Category.

The keywords are taken not only from the caption information, but can also be added either manually or selected from a predefined list.

Additional Categories, Subjects and Keywords can be added to the lists simply by the user. The use of built-in lists helps eliminate the problems caused by typographical  errors and creates a more uniform cataloguing method.

The Imageflow cataloguing system also helps speed up the process of image entry by allowing data to be carried forward from one image to the next and facilitating batch entry.

Effective cataloguing is only one half of the equation, the search engine within any given solution has to live up to potential of the image information available.

Both imageflow and i-netcat have comprehensive search facilities, which allow the user to search by individual fields or a combination of different fields such as category, subject, keywords, photographer, shoot reference, or barcode number.

If you are looking for a new Image Management Solution ensure that it will provide the key to effective cataloguing.

PRODUCT FOCUS : the integration between imageflow and i-netcat

Making full use of the integration between i-netcat and imageflow will create an extremely powerful e-commerce tool.  Projected to be worth £2.4 billion by the end of 2003*, global e-commerce is a quick, effective method of serving existing clients as well as reaching new customers.

(*NUA Internet Surveys)

From the moment you receive a digital image to the production of an invoice, imageflow and i-netcat integrate to create an efficient and effective workflow.

Streamlined cataloguing

Digitised images can be imported into imageflow retaining the IPTC header information produced by the photographer.

Automated upload

Once the images are catalogued, they can then be automatically uploaded to your website, using
i-netcat where they are immediately available to search and view by your customers.

When an image record is updated, it is automatically uploaded to
i-netcat reflecting the changes on the web in real-time.

All images will have their metadata embedded in them using IPTC standard. In similar fashion pictures could be removed from the site in real-time.

Lightboxes

The user can create Lightboxes, which store their selections of images that could then be sent to other people, who could then view the images and if required add them to their own Lightboxes or order them from the library.

On-line rights

When a client decides to want to use a picture, she could simply click on a button to clear rights on line.

This facility checks the rights available for the picture(s) based on the information supplied by the client. This could be anything from usage to territorial rights or even specific customer restrictions.

On-line Pricing

Once the client has cleared rights for the images that they wish to use, the system can give them the pricing for each of the images selected.

The pricing shown will be determined by the client login id, as i-netcat allows either standard or specific pricelists for individual clients. In other words, you could have a set up whereby different groups of clients can have different pricing based on the category of clients.

The pricing at its simplest level is determined by Usage, Circulation/Print Run and Size. The pricelists are shared by both Imageflow and i-netcat, but are maintained in imageflow.

Image download

After confirming their wish proceed with the purchase of the images, the client could then download the high resolution images as a single file (provided that the client has been cleared and given access rights to download images).

The client could either pay for these images on-line or on account depending on their credit status.

Automatic order creation

All rights are updated in imageflow in real-time as soon as the purchase is confirmed.

The download information is used to automatically create an order in imageflow, the back-office system. This  will include the charging of download fees where applicable.

An order will be created in imageflow for which the library can confirm the price, then a usage fee invoice will be automatically generated.

This integration between the back-office system and web front end not only reduces admin activities for the library, but also improves the speed at which new images become available to the client.
